What personal data we collect and why we collect it

Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

Contact forms

Your name and email are required when using Vertex’s contact form. In addition to being passed along, the contents of your inquiries, including email address and optional phone number, will be logged for a period of one year.

Cookies

If you leave a comment on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.

If you have an account and you log in to this site, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

When you log in, we will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.

If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie will be saved in your browser. This cookie includes no personal data and simply indicates the post ID of the article you just edited. It expires after 1 day.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracing your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

IP Addresses

In addition to comments, cookies, and information stored for registered users, IP addresses are also captured for security purposes in one of the two following ways:

  • When an invalid URL is accessed, your IP is logged in the event that you have been attempting to access our site in a way that would damage it or access private contents or settings. We also use this log to identify old or invalid links which we use to redirect you to a valid portion of our site.
  • IP addresses are logged to our firewall software for security purposes. These logs are rotated out on a regular basis (usually only a few days depending on traffic). Additionally, in the event of known hacking attempts, your IP will be stored and reported automatically to the webmaster via email.

Who we share your data with

Obvious personally identifiable information that you provide us using the contact form is kept confidential within Colorado Power Electronics and is not shared with third parties without your consent. We do not use any analytics packages to track usage.

Our hosting provider, PPSStudios, generates server access and error logs including IP addresses. These IP addresses are stored as plain text for a period of one day before being encrypted for another six days at which time they will be securely erased.

Defiant, Inc., our firewall developer, has updated their privacy policy to be compliant with GDPR regulations. We have agreed to their Terms of Use and Privacy Policy which should be reviewed by users of our own site if there is any concern with what information is passed along in our security logs.

Additionally, we use reCAPTCHA to verify that you are either human or a very intelligent robot in order to reduce spam. Google will collect your IP address for this process, and their privacy policy can be viewed at https://policies.google.com/.

How long we retain your data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For users that register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

Security logs containing visitor IP addresses are kept for up to two weeks before they are deleted.

What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you.

This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Where we send your data

Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service.

As stated above, your IP address will be sent to Google when confirming any reCAPTCHA checkboxes in contact forms.

Your contact information

Your contact information which you provide in our contact form will be stored within website logs for a period of one year after which they will be deleted.

If you wish to have these logs deleted before their one-year tenure, please enter your email into the submission form at the bottom of this page, and we will process your request as soon as possible.

Additional information

Data Protection

Databases, including all contact and access logs are maintained behind a secure, encrypted firewall and only accessible by the webmaster/author.

Additionally, our site is served over an SSL/TLS encrypted connection and signed by the LetsEncrypt certificate authority, so any information sent through a form on this site will be protected from traffic sniffing and man-in-the-middle attacks.
